Trompe L'oeil is a french expression meaning "deceive the eye." It is a clever use of artistic technique to create a false impression of space and/or perspective.
Trompe L'oeil mural painting is the illusion created when an artist paints a three-dimensional picture on a two-dimensional surface such as a wall or ceiling. The objective is to alter the viewer's perception of the flat wall surface, and a trompe l'oeil mural may cover an entire wall or even more than one wall or surface.
Trompe L'oeil is a relatively modern term for a centureis-old technique. It was developed by Baroque and Renaissance artists and utilized by the Greeks and Romans. Scenes of landscapes, gardens, and architectural fantasies seem to visually enlarge the space within rooms.
